WASHINGTON - On June 8, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip and Ranking Member of the Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement after a Wall Street Journal report found that Instagram’s algorithm promoted pedophilia content and connected users searching for such content:
"Nearly six months ago, when the wicked trio of Mark Zuckerberg, Nick Clegg, and Joel Kaplan announced their intention to reinstate Trump and open their platform to his billion dollars’ worth of ad money, falsely and disgustingly in the name of free speech, I said there was no low they would not stoop to in order to reverse their stagnant growth. Never have I been more disgusted and disappointed to be proven right.
"Clegg and Zuckerberg have apologized to me for their roles in the Rohingya genocide, and I expect they will do the same here. If it was not clear before, it is certainly clear now that we must change our laws governing Big Tech. We need a national consumer data privacy law AND we desperately need to reform Section 230. The Online Consumer Protection Act, which I authored and will soon reintroduce with my friend and colleague Kathy Castor would give the Federal Trade Commission authority to hold platforms accountable for systemic failures like this one and the many others caused by Meta. Further, it would allow victims to sue Zuckerberg, Clegg, and Kaplan for their injuries. If they had any shame, all three would resign, along with Guy Rosen and their entire trust and safety team.
"To my colleagues: Now is the time to act!"
