WASHIGNTON – On May 19, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip and Ranking Member of the Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to sidestep requests to limit Section 230:
“We need new laws to hold Big Tech accountable. The ball is in Congress' court. That is why I intend to reintroduce the Online Consumer Protection Act with Representative Kathy Castor in the coming weeks. Our bill balances free speech and safety while placing burdens on platforms, not consumers. For too long technology companies have allowed harmful content to spread across their platforms in violation of their promises to consumers. Worse, they have used Section 230 to shield themselves from liability for the dangerous and often illegal conduct that they knowingly facilitate on their platforms. The overwhelming majority of Americans have had enough.”
