Big Inning Boosts TCU Over Northwestern, 9-2

The Northwestern Wildcats kept it close early on Wednesday, but ultimately fell to the TCU Horned Frogs by final score of 9-2.

Ethan Sund (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Northwestern (1-14). Michael Farinelli started the ballgame and went three innings, surrendering one run on two hits, walking one and striking out one.

In the batter's box, the Wildcats were led by senior Stephen Hrustich, who went 1-for-1 on the day with three walks. Owen McElfatrick furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Wildcats first put runs on the board in the third inning. Northwestern got an RBI single from McElfatrick, scoring junior Vincent Bianchina from second base.

The Horned Frogs scored one in the fourth and then exploded in the fifth inning, using two home runs and a triple to increase their lead to 8-1. They added another run in the seventh to make it 9-1 heading into the ninth inning, when the Wildcats responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Hrustich came across to score for Northwestern, which brought the score to 9-2, but the 'Cats couldn't mount any more of a comeback. The ballgame ended with a final score of 9-2.

GAME NOTES» Northwestern pitchers faced 39 TCU hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and six fly balls while striking out seven.» The Wildcats drew five walks from TCU pitching.» Hrustich's three walks were the most in a game by a Wildcat this season.» Freshman Braeden Sloan led the Horned Frogs pitching staff and got the win after throwing six innings of one-run ball.
