Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison said he is hoping to see Senate Majority Leader Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) make good on his vow to clean up corruption in Springfield.
"I hope leader Don Harmon is truly serious and resolute on corruption! We shall see.” Morrison said in a recent tweet. He shared a link to a blog post about lawmakers under investigation.
Over just the past 36 months, one state senator has come under federal investigation and at least five others are now at the center of ongoing federal probes. One of those is former longtime House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-southwest Chicago), who is now awaiting trial on federal corruption charges.
During his inauguration speech to newly sworn-in lawmakers, Harmon was blunt in telling his audience that he will hold them accountable.
“If you aren’t here to do what’s right for the people of Illinois, I would suggest you take Mr. Rochford’s advice,” Harmon said, referencing former Chicago Police Supt. James Rochford's warning to new officers. He told them that if they lacked integrity, they needed to find another career because those who didn’t meet expectations of how to act would be found out and let go.
“The people of Illinois deserve, better and it is up to us to deliver," Harmon said in his address.
