A project aimed at improving the downtown area in the Village of Winnetka is about to enter its fifth phase, and the Village Council was recently updated about what's next on the list for improvements.
During a Jan. 3 meeting, the council received the plan for Phase 5 of the Streetscape program, which was designed and approved by associates from Teska Inc.
"Our goal is to resurface Elm Street all the way from just east of the intersection of Lincoln Avenue, all the way to Sheridan Road," James Bernahl, Winnetka's City engineer, told the council. "So this will beautify the entire corridor all the way through. That's primarily the big change for this year's program and why we're seeking to get the contracts at the same time. We anticipate that based on the volatility of the market right now, we're not sure what kind of prices we're going to get. So we think by putting these [water main and streetscape projects] together it'll help us out getting better prices for that."
Phase 4 of the Streetscape program was completed last year. It included expanding improvements into the West Elm business district, redoing underground infrastructure, repaving, new sidewalks, new light fixtures and landscaping.
The project's fifth phase centers around Elm Street and addressing uneven pavements and continuing the new city lighting scheme. Other parts of the project include adding bike storage, replacing unhealthy trees and ADA features.
Board members asked a few questions of both Bernahl and the representative from Teska. Phase 5 is slated to start on July 10, with street access to remain open in various ways throughout the entire process.
