The Wheeling Village Board recently recognized numerous individuals for their part in saving the life of an unresponsive woman during the summer.

At the Dec. 5 board meeting, Fire Chief Michael McGreal discussed how dispatcher Jacqueline Miller talked Amy Flores’ son Christian through performing CPR on his mother on Aug. 30 and stayed on the phone with him until fire department responders arrived on the scene. An ambulance from Long Grove was called in due to all Wheeling ambulances out on other calls. The board presented Christian with a Citizen’s Life Saving Award and also awarded Miller, Long Grove firefighters Mike Gallagher and Nick McDowell, Wheeling Battalion Chief Mark Menzel, Lieutenant Jason McCall, and firefighters Jeff Goulash and Joe Dina.

“It is wonderful when you hear stories about saving lives like this,” Wheeling Village President Patrick Horcher said at the meeting. “I mean, the fire departments from all the cities, they go out and they do this kind of work every day. Never normally this unique where a dispatcher has to guide someone through keeping somebody alive until the trained professionals get there. But really such an amazing example of what all of you guys do. And thank all of you so much for everything you do.”

Flores attended the board meeting to thank the people who helped her.

The Wheeling Police Department was also honored at the meeting for its yearly fundraiser in conjunction with the Bear Family’s McDonald's restaurant to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The department raised $1,000 this year, its fifth annual event.
