The Winnetka village council Landmark Preservation Committee presented its rehabilitation award to Ron and Kathleen Hamburger who renovated a 103-year-old house, including adding a front porch that complemented the existing architecture.
The renovations perfectly complemented the original style of the house and fit perfectly into the neighborhood.
"Thank you to the whole group of you for restoring for rehabilitating this property and saving a beautiful property for one and preserving the character of your neighborhood," village trustee Jack Coladarci said. "It's an enormously important for us to try to save as much as we can. And so thank you from the bottom of our hearts for doing what you did. Thank you."
The village presents an award each year for a historical preservation project in the village. They give this award to a resident or residents who have taken a historical home and renovated it and brought it back to life rather than destroyed it. There are three categories in this award: restoration, rehabilitation, or new Construction.
The residents were at the meeting to receive the award, including the architect that worked on the project. Kathy talked about how they moved into town to be closer to their kids and grandkids and had a new experience in renovating an old house. They put the porch on specifically so that they can meet neighbors and have an easy way of meeting and spending time with people.
