Peter Masters, director of special education, gives an update to the board at Norridge School District 80.

“They support us through our co-teaching model, so having our special education teachers push into the general ed classroom and collaborating with a general ed teacher to give our students the best opportunity for learning,” Masters said during the board meeting.

The district uploaded its Livestream of its public meeting to its YouTube channel.

Masters talked with the board about recent updates within the special education program. The program sends out updates at the end of each trimester to each of the students identified as having a disability just to update parents on how things are going within the classroom. The most recent round of report cards should go out in the first few days of December.

The board also voted to approve to increase of substitute teacher pay to $140 from $126 per day in a previous board meeting. The district operates two schools.

The special education committee has also been very busy so far this school year. They have been working on creating a department-wide handbook, which they finished on the day of the board meeting and were hoping to give out in about a week’s time. This was done in an effort to have a much more cohesive and consistent department.

The board will meet again at 7 p.m. on Dec. 13 in the gymnasium at John Leight School on 8151 West Lawrence Ave.

Their future projects include creating some sample IEPs and tutorials on various challenges in paperwork processes, which is something that takes up a lot of time in the department. They have briefly started looking at some summer training for staff, and some of the staff went to training and lectures in Chicago this past fall.
