Matt Podgorski is calling for more Republicans on the Cook County Board.
“Cook County needs balance. There are currently 15 Democrats and only 2 Republicans on the Cook County Board," Podgorski posted on Facebook. "Now government insiders are trying to take out the last two Republicans, so that there is zero opposition. One party rule is never a good thing."
Seventeen commissioners are elected to serve four-year terms on the Cook County Board of Commissioners, which is currently headed by Democratic Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Each commissioner represents approximately 300,000 residents.
Peter Silvestri, the current 9th District Commissioner and one of two Republicans on the board, announced in January that he would not seek reelection, the Journal & Topics reported. Silvestri said that at age 65, he was looking forward to traveling and teaching and wanted to give someone else a chance to represent the district, which includes parts of the city's northwest side. The other Republican on the board is Sean Morrison, who represents the 17th District.
Podgorski is the Republican candidate seeking to represent the 9th District in Cook County's Board of Commissioners, according to Ballotpedia. He defeated two challengers in the primary and will face Democrat Maggie Trevor in the upcoming general election.
