The Evanston City Council recently weighed arguments for and against a the construction of a roadway during its Sept. 12 meeting.

The suggested roadway would be constructed on property leased by the city from MWRD (Metropolitan Water Reclamation District) and subleased to Canal Shores.

Eleanor Revelle, alderwoman of Evanston's 7th Ward, stated that MWRD has the final say on whether or not to approve the road easement.

"This may sound familiar because actually, this is the third time that a roadway across MWRD property has been proposed and come before the council," Revelle said.

Matt Rooney, vice president of the board of trustees of Canal Shores, attended the council meeting to request that the city vote against the easement on behalf of the golf club.

Rooney noted the updated plans for the proposed easement would not result in the removal of any old-growth trees during construction, it would result in the removal of a portion of the tenth hole, requiring the golf course to realign the hole and remove the trees.

Members of the council discussed the proposed easement at length, voicing their reservations and interest regarding its various aspects.

One member was largely against to the property owners' land being modified whatsoever because it is currently an undeveloped area of the wetlands.

Another member supported the easement running through a portion of the golf course if it enabled affordable housing, but remained concerned about the easement's route.

The council ultimately voted 8-0 to register their disapproval to the requested easement.
