Two Nicaraguans are being treated for scabies infections after being diagnosed with the parasite over the weekend.
Elk Grove Village put out the press release after rumors began to circulate that the infections were monkeypox, not scabies.
“Village officials are monitoring two confirmed cases of scabies infection at the La Quinta hotel in Elk Grove Village. Symptoms were discovered among some of the migrants staying at the hotel when the Elk Grove Village Fire Department responded to an unrelated call for service earlier today. Officials from Alexian Brothers Medical Center have confirmed that the symptoms are a result of a scabies infection,” the Village of Elk Grove said in a press release. “The individuals affected are being provided appropriate treatment and all other migrants staying in the La Quinta have been screened for symptoms by state and county officials. The hotel is currently working to clean and sanitize the facility in order to limit possible exposure.”
The press release stated that the Village is working with officials from the Cook County Department of Public Health, the Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
The infected are part of a contingent of those bused in from Texas to Chicago in protest of the federal government’s open border policy.
While the CDC is very strict about medical exams in requiring foreigners seeking documents to live in the country legally, the same cannot be said for those crossing the border illegally.
The group was dropped off at the La Quinta by Chicago Regional Transit authority buses. They are staying there “indefinitely,” North Cook News reported.
Elk Grove Mayor Craig Johnson, in calling out Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot dropping the group without warning, noted his concerns regarding the status of the group's members.
"What kind of background checks have been done for security with them? And what kind of health screenings? Because I understand the federal government deemed it to be legal, which is out of my purview and I have to accept that. And being legal, there's limited things we can do. But I am sworn to protect the health, and safety as well for my community, and those questions answered so that I can rest assured my community that they're fine to be here,” he said.
Lightfoot had earlier said she’d welcome the busloads from Texas, which has sent similar buses to New York and Washington, D.C., each of which has taken in around 8,000 illegal immigrants.
Similarly, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has begun sending those in the country illegally to Democrat-controlled sanctuary states.
Despite leftists protests, critics maintain the group at the Elk Grove Village La Quinta – supported by a bevy of nonprofit support from the likes of Catholic Charities – is in the country illegally. While the Biden administration’s stance on immigration departs greatly from its predecessor, federal laws have not been changed.
Due to the Biden administration’s non-enforcement, the number of illegal border crossings per day is at an all-time high at the southern border.
In September, Border Patrol has noted 8,000 encounters with those illegally crossing the border each day. Last September, that number was 7,700 per day.
