Village of Wheeling Senior Commission met Aug. 4.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

1- Call to Order Commissioner Kaplan called meeting to order at 10am.

2- Roll Call Commissioner Marabella let the commission know she would be absent. All other commissioners present. Bella from the Wheeling Park District, Diana Murillo from the Social Services and Officer Kim from Crime Prevention present.

3- Approval of Minutes None to approve

4- Citizens’ Comments and Concerns Ms. Bentley asked the commission how we can let the seniors who do not have internet access know about our programs. Municipal Code 2.03.060 Subjects of Orders of Business

Citizen Concerns and Comments. Members of the public may address the committee with comments regarding only those items that are relevant to village business. Issues relevant to Village business are defined to mean information about Village events; issues that the public body has the authority to address; items listed on the agenda; and items or issues previously voted on by the Village Board or that the Village Board has the authority to consider or vote on in the future. No citizen shall speak for more than five minutes without consent of the committee. The village president shall strictly restrain comments and questions to matters that are relevant to village business and shall not permit repetitious comments or arguments. Members of the general public who wish to address the board must sign the request to speak form prior to the commencement of the public meeting.

5- Chairman’s Report: None

6- Senior Services Report

i. Congregate Dining Diana Murillo, stepping in for Liaison Huizar discussed the use of additional decorations and special treats for the participants.

These are some of the ideas being implemented to attract more diners.

7- Recreation/Program Services Report: Bella was present to talk about the current trips and how they are almost full. Registration is now open for the Fall fling happening on Sept 27 at Chevy Chase. Bella wants to revamp the active adults programs and is open to any new suggestions. She is looking for the commissioners to help her spread the word in hopes of welcoming back past participants and will work with them if they wish to change the time and dates of any program and or if they wish to add a new activity.

8- Old Business: Suggestion made to bring back current events discussions

i. Senior Active Adult Resource Extravaganza: Senior Extravaganza, will be held at the park district. Vendors will be out in the lobby and in front of the gym area to have people see where the different areas of interest are located and to make them aware of the different areas the Park District has to offer.

9- New Business None

10- Crime Prevention: Citizen Police Academy/ Fire Department will start next month if anyone is interested in joining. Online Reporting QR code was handed out to help spread the word of the importance of reporting any incident to help combat crime

11-Announcements – Next meeting will be Thursday, September 1, 2022

12-Adjournment Motion made by Commissioner Portnoy and seconded by Commissioner Kohen.
