NU Defeats SIUE and Virginia at Tri-Dual

12

Northbrook College of Healthcare issued the following announcement on Dec. 29

Northwestern swept through Wednesday's tri-dual at Welsh-Ryan Arena, defeating SIUE 39-3 before a heart-stopping 18-16 win over Virginia.

After the Cavaliers clawed their way back in the second dual of the day, Virginia took a 16-15 lead with just one matchup remaining in the 133.

That's where Chris Cannon came up with a takedown in the final seconds to complete an 8-7 decision over Brian Courtney and hand Northwestern the win. It was the latest standout performance of the season from Cannon, after a run to the finals of the Cliff Keen Invitational in November.

The Wildcats wouldn't have been in a winner-take-all position against Virginia without a pin from Yahya Thomas in the 149. Thomas added a major decision against SIUE to complete an impressive afternoon on the mat.

In their first dual of the day, Northwestern overhwhelmed SIUE behind commanding performances across the team's weight classes.

Trevor Chumbley pinned Max Kristoff in 4:21 to give the Wildcats a boost in the 157. Chumbley, who finished second in his weight class at the Michigan State Open last month, would add a 4-0 decision against UVA's Denton Spencer to complete his tri-dual with pair of victories.

Lucas Davison and Matt Vinci added major decisions for Northwestern against the Panthers, as the Wildcats cruised against their intra-state foe.

Northwestern is back in action in 2022 as Chicago's Big Ten Team heads to Madison to open Big Ten Play against Wisconsin on January 7.
