U.S. Attorney General and north suburbanite Merrick Garland was once a totalitarian dictator.

A fictitious one, that is.

Garland was a sophomore at Niles West High School when he and fellow classmates Vern Hill, Maria Miller and Chris Petersen handled "planning strategy" for "Mitto," a fictitious totalitarian state. The students "ruled the world with the help of computers."

Their work was featured in the Chicago Tribune on Thursday Dec. 28, 1967, described as "Electronic Diplomacy."

Garland grew up at 4456 Lunt Ave. in Lincolnwood.

As a senior at Niles West, Garland was a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. He was also one of three winners of the 1970 C. Howard Searle Memorial Scholarship, awarded in March 1970.

C. Howard Searle was the president of pharmaceutical giant G.D. Searle in 1917.

In May 1970, Garland was one of two Chicago area students be named a Presidential Scholar. He attended Harvard University and Harvard Law School.

In May 2016, Garland was the commencement speaker at Niles West. He returned a cold call from school principal Jason Ness and agreed to his invitation.

Garland's parents were Cyril and Shirley Garland.

Cyril, who died in 2000, was a University of Chicago graduate. Shirley was a housewife who served on the Lincolnwood School District 74 School Board from 1964-68.

Garland, 71, was named U.S. Attorney General in March 2021. He served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1997-2021.
