Patent office takes 715 days to approve Arlington Heights inventor’s patent in week ending Aug. 14

The longest time between a patent being filed and granted in the week ending Aug. 14 in Arlington Heights was 715 days, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent application was filed by Robert R. Sever for a modified dry ice systems and methods for preserving perishable items within a single holding volume. It was filed on Aug. 26, 2019 before being approved on Aug. 10, 2021.

Though patents are required for inventions and products, the granting of a patent is not a guarantee for success. Dennis Crouch, co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property & Entrepreneurship said roughly 50 percent of patents expire prematurely due to costs.

There were two patents granted for Arlington Heights inventors in the week ending Aug. 14.
