Illinois state Sen. Ann Gillespie (D-Arlington Heights) passed a Medicaid reform package earlier this month to secure additional insurance coverage and services for the state’s older population.
The Senate voted unanimously in favor of the bill, now set to be reviewed by the governor.
"Expanding Medicaid coverage will result in better health outcomes for the most vulnerable," Gillespie posted on Facebook. "This measure adds essential-care options to the Medicaid program and will ensure that everyone has access to quality care."
The bill, known as Senate Bill 2294, requires the Department of Healthcare and Family Services (DHFS) to offer services to the elderly. The initiative will also be responsible for the increase of Medicaid reimbursement rates for dental services, mental health, marriage and family counseling, and immunizations for individuals under 21.
Services such as chiropractic care, post-kidney transplant management, veteran therapy and smoking intervention will also be added to the Illinois Medicaid program under the legislation. In addition to program offerings, the DHFS must also deliver the services to elderly residents.
