City of Evanston issued the following announcement on May 19.
The City of Evanston is reminding residents of seasonal restrictions on gasoline-powered leaf blowers and lawn irrigation.
Gasoline-powered leaf blowers
Backpack-mounted or handheld gasoline-powered leaf blowers are not allowed for use in Evanston from May 16 through September 29. Any person who uses a leaf blower or any person who permits the private or commercial use of a leaf blower on their property during this time period is subject to a fine.
All landscape contractors are required to register with the City and must complete a sustainable landscape management survey. Residents are encouraged to make sure their contractor is registered.
The Evanston City Council is currently considering changes to existing leaf blower restrictions, which may include updates to days and hours when leaf blower usage is permitted, revised fines, and further limits on the types of leaf blowers allowed to be used seasonally.
Residents are reminded that blowing or raking leaves into the street is a nuisance, and can cause flooding and block sewers.
Lawn irrigation limits
In accordance with requirements from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), lawn irrigation limits are in effect in Evanston from May 15 through September 15 each year.
During these months, lawn irrigation with water supplied from the City's waterworks system is only permitted for odd-numbered addresses on odd-numbered dates and for even-numbered addresses on even-numbered dates. No lawn irrigation is permitted between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on any day of the week at any address.
These restrictions apply only to lawn irrigation; garden watering is exempt from the limits. In addition, an exception to the limits applies for lawns 90 days after new sod is laid or new lawn seed is sown.
Lawn irrigation from September 16 through May 14 is not subject to the limits.
