With nearly all the votes counted, first-time candidate Kristen Steel appeared destined to fall just short in her run for the Schaumburg Township High School District 211 school board.

Several media outlets have reported with 146 of 148 precincts reporting in the race for three open seats, Steel stood in fifth place with 5,401 votes.

Steel ran on a platform of reopening schools for in-person learning and never wavered in her push to do so.

“We need to be safe, and we need to be reasonable, but we need to get them back in school,” she previously told the North Cook News. “We can’t be misled by the fearful minds. All the data shows us that being in school in-person full time is what sets them up for success.”

Throughout her campaign, Steel said her campaign was motivated by the need to take a stand for abused and misused taxpayers across the state.

“Why do we continue to squeeze blood out of our taxpayer turnip?” she said. “We got an almost 8% unemployment rate. Why are we doing that when we’re sitting on a reserve? There are a lot of different avenues that the board could take, but voting on taking the maximum tax levy again is not one I would be in support of.”
