The Evanston City Council is slated to tackle the issue of reparations for black residents at a March 22 gathering.
For the question of who is responsible to pay for reparations, the Evanston City Council has answered .... marijuana users.
The council is slated to meet on March 22 to determine if they want to go forward and tax marijuana at a higher rate than other goods as they seek funding to tackle the issue of reparations for black residents.
Members are poised to vote on the issue as part of a plan where revenue from the 3 percent tax on legal marijuana sales would be used to fund any repayments agreed upon.
Many are keeping close watch on the council’s actions after reports surfaced members were slated to vote on the issue at its last meeting.
The first initiative of the $10 million plan is the Restorative Housing Reparations program, which reportedly is considering up to $25,000 for housing per eligible resident and is being touted as a measure designed to address the discriminatory housing practices of the past.
If it passes, Evanston would become the first U.S. city to use marijuana revenues for reparations.
