Glencoe Park District issued the following announcement on Feb 12.
Organic honey, harvested behind the Takiff Center, is now available for purchase! Each jar is $10 and all proceeds benefit our C.A.R.E. (Community Access to Recreation for Everyone) Scholarship. Honey can be purchased at the Takiff Center front desk.
The honey is the product of the Glencoe Park District's sustainability initiative to start an apiary program. "By bringing honeybees to Glencoe, we are playing an important role in maintaining and enhancing our ecosystem. These pollinators support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small," said Chris Leiner, Director of Parks and Maintenance.
Two bee hives were installed in 2018 behind Takiff Field (near the greenhouses) and over 75,000 honeybees now live in the hives. The honeybees spent the summer months pollinating plants in Glencoe and producing over 50 pounds of honey. During the fall months, Glencoe Park District staff members harvested the honey, leaving 50% of the honey for the bees to eat during the winter months. Staff members unsealed the honeycombs and used a special spinner to extract the honey. Environmental particles were removed from the honey during the filtration process. The pure honey was then jarred. Watch the process here.
