On the heels of a summer when he held three community blood drives, veteran state Rep. Tom Morison (R-Palatine) has been honored with the 2020 Legislator of the Year Award from the Illinois Coalition of Community Blood Centers (ICCBC).
“The need for blood is something that unites us as human beings,” Morrison said. “With all of the tension and turmoil going on in the world today, this is just one positive, life-giving activity we can do as individuals and a community.”
Held in partnership with Vitalant and Palatine Township, Morrison’s drives also served as centers for food donations for the Palatine Township food pantry.
“We’re grateful to have someone who’s worked so hard on our behalf,” ICCBC Government Affairs Director Margaret Vaughn said. “Sixty percent of our blood supply comes from community blood drives, and since March, thousands have been cancelled due to COVID-19. Especially during this time of crisis, (Morrison) has gone above and beyond to answer the call of duty.”
Morrison recently hosted an appointment-driven event at Palatine Township, where volunteers were able to make blood donations in an environment in which all safety precautions were adhered to. Morrison aid his wife was slated to be a first time donor for the event.
“There is still a serious need for blood and this event will help increase our supply,” Morrison added. “Donating blood doesn’t take long, but has an immediate impact that can help save lives, especially during the shortage that we are experiencing. I would encourage residents who are able to book an appointment and come help out.”
ICCBC was founded in 2002 and is a statewide organization made up of nonprofit blood centers whose mission is to increase awareness of the importance of volunteer blood donation through public education and advocacy.
