ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 55: Moylan Highlights Utility Relief Programs

55

Illinois State House District 55 issued the following announcement on July 23

State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is encouraging residents who are experiencing financial hardship to apply for utility relief programs made available in response to COVID-19.

“The economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 crisis has placed a significant financial burden on residents, many of whom are struggling to pay their bills,” Moylan said. “The utility relief programs available will give residents some breathing room and allow them to develop an affordable payment plan so they can continue to receive their critical utility services.”

An agreement between Ameren Illinois, American Water, Aqua Illinois, Utility Services of IL, NICOR Gas, North Shore Gas, People’s Gas, ComEd and the state of Illinois will give residents some utility payment relief. Residents may enter into deferred payment arrangements with their utility providers between 18 and 24 months with reduced or eliminated down payments based on eligibility. Utility companies will also delay reporting late or non-payments to credit bureaus for up to four months. Residents in need of utility payment relief should call their utility provider, explain their situation and ask about the options available to them.

Residents eligible for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) may enroll in a Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) beginning July 27. Through the PIPP, residents would pay a percentage of their monthly income, and in turn they will receive a monthly benefit toward their bill and possibly additional reductions on their total owed amount for on-time payments. More information and how to apply may be found at https://www2.illinois.gov/dceo/CommunityServices/UtilityBillAssistance/Pages/default.aspx.

“We have to continue to adapt and make adjustments to the status-quo during these unprecedented times and provide relief to residents,” Moylan said. “While we continue to fight COVID-19 we also have to ensure some financial stability for people.”
