Illinois State House District 19 issued the following announcement on June 25.

This past session, state Rep. Lindsey LaPointe, D-Chicago, supported a new law to provide financial assistance for Illinois renters and homeowners impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

“This unprecedented health crisis has caused a lot of financial hardship, and many Illinoisans can no longer afford to pay their bills,” said LaPointe. “Expanding rent and mortgage assistance will give working families the financial assistance they need to get through these difficult times.”

In response to the economic impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, LaPointe supported Senate Bill 264, to ensure relief and protection for homeowners and renters. The measure will secure $396 million dollars in emergency funds through the federal CARES Act to provide for rental and mortgage assistance in the budget. In addition, a portion of the funds will be used to help complete previously approved affordable rental housing development projects. This bill is now law.

“This new law will provide the financial resources and structural support our families need to access housing relief and stability,” LaPointe said. “No matter the circumstances, every Illinois family is deserving of compassion, empathy and support.”
