Evanston Township High School District 202 issued the following announcement on May 14.
Evanston Township High School (ETHS) held its annual Senior Scholarships Night on May 13, acknowledging students in the Class of 2020 who are scholarship recipients through the ETHS Scholarship program. Echo Allen and Aldric Martinez-Olson, who were nominated by their fellow ETHS seniors, are the 2020 recipients of the North End Mothers’ Club Award and the Oliver Baty Cunningham Memorial Prize. This year’s event was held virtually.
Each year, senior students are encouraged to apply for ETHS Scholarships for which they may qualify. Two of the scholarships – North End Mothers’ Club Award and the Oliver Baty Cunningham Memorial Prize – are by nomination only.
North End Mothers’ Club Award
This award is presented annually to the senior who identifies as female or gender nonconforming, and who ranks first among their classmates in all-around qualities, including intellectual ability, steadfastness of character, capacity for leadership, and distinguished service to school and community. The student must have maintained a 3.5 GPA.
ETHS senior Echo Allen has had leadership roles in lacrosse, varsity golf, speech and debate, student senate, National Honor Society, and community service club. She was also the student representative to the ETHS District 202 Board of Education this school year.
Allen’s ability to pull people together has allowed her to become a positive force in the community, helping establish local chapters of March For Our Lives and Students Demand Action. She was also instrumental in organizing her peers in the creation of over 1,500 handwritten “love notes” to go into food bags for local children during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Oliver Baty Cunningham Memorial Prize
This scholarship is awarded annually to the senior who identifies as male or gender nonconforming, and who ranks first among the members of their class in all-around qualities, including intellectual ability, capacity for leadership, sense of responsibility, and distinguished service to school and community.
ETHS senior Aldric Martinez-Olson has poured his heart into foundations such as the Evanston School Children's Clothing Association, helping low-income children find new clothing, and the ETHS Thrift Shop, introducing students to sustainable shopping with all proceeds going to the Student Emergency Assistance Fund. As a founding member of the E-Town Sunrise climate justice group, he has worked closely with the administration to make sure that equity, social justice, and voices of color are never left out of environmental sustainability conversations.
Martinez-Olson has excelled academically at ETHS through his strong curiosity, management techniques, optimism, and his hard work ethic. One of his proudest moments will always be his recognition by the Black Caucus for having a GPA of 4.0 or higher for seven semesters.
Senior Scholarships Night is an annual event with scholarships awarded by the ETHS College & Career Services Department. You can watch this year’s virtual event and learn about this year’s ETHS scholarship winners on the ETHS YouTube site.
