COVID-19 restrictions closed the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, but that has not stopped construction in and around the shopping center to make it a centerpiece as an economic hub for the region.

Part of the updates at the mall include Peppa Pig World of Play Indoor Play Center, which replaces the Rainforest Cafe, the Daily Herald reported in late-April. Officials were hoping to hold a ceremonial groundbreaking in mid-March but that was postponed because of the coronavirus. Officials said they anticipate the play center will be opening sometime this summer.

Mayor Tom Dailly said the withdrawal of the Rainforest Cafe was a disappointment, the Daily Herald reported. However, he added that the Peppa Pig World of Play Center will be better for kids who visit the mall.

"We're excited to have them," Dailly told the Daily Herald. "This is a new, exciting development to come in."

Mall plans reveal that Versona, which is a women's apparel, jewelry, and accessories brand, is also preparing to open its new store in the mall, the Daily Herald reported. The new Versona will be located on the middle level near Macy's.

There are also many projects surrounding the mall that are preparing for the restrictions to be lifted. For one, Perry's Steakhouse & Grille is aiming to open a location this summer just across Golf Road. The new steakhouse will be located west of the Hyatt Regency. The new Perry's will feature a Bar 79 with a patio for outside dining.

The municipal zoning board also OK'd a recreational marijuana dispensary in the area, the Daily Herald reported. The recreational dispensary would occupy three spaces at the Woodfield Gatherings outlet development.

The Daily Herald also reported that there have been no objections from neighbors of the project.
