The Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service has been working to assist Illinois residents as the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the state.

Since the pandemic began, Serve Illinois has facilitated the donation of 6,752,116 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE), which have been distributed to all of the state’s 102 counties.

As part of the commission's efforts, 11,230 volunteers have helped 1,711,035 people during this time of crisis. And they’re not interested in stopping. The organization is still recruiting volunteers and accepting donations.

Those who want to volunteer or donate PPE to the cause should visit www.Serve.Illinois.gov. To donate PPE, email PPE.Donations@illinois.gov.

Additionally, the Serve Illinois Commission is helping place medically trained volunteers with those who need help during this time. So far, 343 medically trained volunteers have served 2,643 hours in 16 counties.

Individuals who have medical experience and want to volunteer should visit www.IllinoisHelps.net.

“Illinoisans are doing an amazing job answering the call, but we are still in the fight,” Serve Illinois Commissioner Char Foss-Eggemann said. “Any PPE or any amount of time you can contribute makes a difference.” Please do not put yourself or others at risk by coming to volunteer if you are sick. You will be asked to return home if you are displaying signs of illness.”

The organization is also encouraging donations to the Illinois COVID-19 response fund, which is meant to provide additional monetary resources to community foundations and nonprofits that are working to support citizens who need emergency food, basic supplies, interim housing and shelter, health services, utility assistance, and other aid.
