Village officials are threatening to condemn a retail property at a major gateway to Elk Grove due to its owners delaying the development of the corridor.
Almost a year ago, the Village Board acquired property on the corner of 1700-1706 Oakton St., according to the Daily Herald. But the village has been trying to get other property owners on the land to voluntarily sell their holdings.
After four offers, village officials are at a standstill in purchasing land from the retail property. If the owners don't accept the next offer, officials will have their attorney go to court.
"My hope is the owner wants to work with us again and resolve this and be done," Mayor Craig Johnson told the Daily Herald. "If not, then we'll let the court decide."
Village officials plan to tear down the retail strip to create a gateway to the village, which will have an Elk Grove Hotel site directly behind where the retail businesses are.
