U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams indicated in a White House press briefing last week that Chicago will see number of coronavirus cases rise.
It is among several U.S. cities earmarked as hot spots for the infectious disease. On "CBS This Morning," he said New York had more than 44,000 confirmed cases and 519 deaths, making it the highest in the country, and he was hopeful it would slow down, according to The Daily Herald.
Adams said that Chicago, Detroit, and New Orleans would be having a "worse week next week."
In Illinois, Chicago cases make up approximately three-quarters of the total cases. The Army Corps Commander Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite said the corps is setting up a makeshift hospital at Chicago's McCormick Place Convention Center, according to NBC News 5. It will accommodate 3,000 patients and include 750 beds in self-contained units. It is supposed to be ready by April 24.
Chicago officials are also working to reopen a closed hospital for space for patients, and also to use hotels for mild cases that need to be quarantined.
