Illinois State House District 54 issued the following announcement on Jan. 14
Today, State Representative Tom Morrison (R-Palatine) joined Governor JB Pritzker at a bill signing to help streamline property tax filings for Cook County senior citizens. The new law enables them to automatically renew their senior homestead property tax exemptions through 2023.
Representative Morrison, whose district encompasses suburban Cook County, was a chief-co sponsor of the legislation, HB961.
“Prior to today, those who received the senior homestead exemption were required to reapply on an annual basis, and this was an issue that many of my older constituents complained should be changed,” said Morrison.
“Further backing the need for change, the Cook County Treasurer annually contacted my office for assistance in reminding specific seniors in my district of the exemptions they were entitled to, but for whatever reasons they had failed to re-apply for, per the law’s requirement.
“Today’s action is a small change but one I think will help make life a little easier on our senior residents,” Morrison continued.
HB961 was supported by Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi, and with the Governor’s signature, it is now effective. The homestead exemption is available for residents over the age of 65, and carries a maximum reduction of $8,000 in Cook County.
