ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 55: Moylan Continues to Fight for Gun Safety, Supports the Fair Tax Amendment, Protects Women’s Right to Choose

Illinois State House District 55 issued the following announcement on June 1

As the spring legislative session concluded Saturday, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, supported a balanced, responsible budget that holds the line on middle class taxes and reflected a commitment to control spending and pay down old bills while investing in health care, education, career training and other critical services that residents depend on.

“As we work to put Illinois back on track, we had to pass a balanced budget that focuses on the priorities of residents across the state,” Moylan said. “After years of crisis, I’m encouraged by the renewed commitment to fund our schools and ensure that lifesaving services, such as breast cancer screenings, are emphasized.”

The Moylan-backed budget invests $375 million in new funding for public schools, while committing more than $1 billion to pay down old bills inherited from Bruce Rauner’s budget crisis. The spending plan makes the state’s full pension obligation, and followed action this week to create a Fair Tax system, protect women’s health choices and close loopholes with the state’s gun laws.

“As I continue to sponsor and support many commonsense gun safety reforms, we were able to pass meaningful legislation that would close many loopholes to anyone looking to illegally purchase a firearm,” Moylan said. “The Fix the FOID Act, which I co-sponsored, would also require stronger universal background checks on all firearm transactions in the state of Illinois.”

Concerned about the health and safety of children and young adults, Moylan also led the effort to express concern with recreational marijuana legalization. Moylan emphasized the need to ensure that law enforcement and other stakeholders were involved in the process, and is encouraging the state to be vigilant in any rollout of legalized recreational marijuana.

As a long-time advocate for working and middle class families, Moylan supported legislation that would let voters decide if they would like to reform the Illinois state income tax system to a fairer tax system as opposed to the current regressive flat tax. The Fair Tax Amendment will have to be approved by voters at the next general election.

“I have fought for years to lessen the tax burden on the working and middle class families in my district,” Moylan said. “Our current tax system is broken, and the new tax proposal I supported would provide tax relief to over 97% of the families in my district, saving money for working families while the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share.”

Moylan also stood up to protect Illinois residents from the dangerous war against women and their reproductive independence. Other states all over the country have been passing regressive legislation that will limit a woman’s right to make her own decision regarding her own reproductive health. Moylan supported the Reproductive Health Act, which is legislation that will further protect a woman’s fundamental right and ability to make her own decision about her own body.

“This war on women coming from Donald Trump and his dangerous allies needs to stop immediately,” Moylan said. “We need to proactively do everything we can to ensure that women in Illinois are able to make their own decisions when it comes to their bodies and their reproductive health.”

“While we have passed some very important measures and reforms during this legislative session, our work is not done,” Moylan said. “We must continue to work together on solutions that will keep our communities safe, provide relief to working and middles class families, ensure that our schools are among the best in the country and protect women all over the state of Illinois.”

Moylan serves the 55th Representative District, which contains parts of Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Elk Grove Village and some nearby communities. For more information, please contact Moylan’s full-time constituent office at 847-635-6821 or email StateRepMoylan@gmail.com.
