Illinois' 19th State House District issued the following announcement on Feb. 15.
WBEZ Education reporter Kate McGee named Rep. Rob Martwick's bill to create an Elected School Board for City Colleges of Chicago (HB827) one of "7 Higher Education Bills To Watch In Illinois".
"Currently, the mayor appoints board members," wrote McGee. "Under this bill, the city would be divided into 20 districts with one at-large position. Martwick also filed a bill to create an elected school board for Chicago Public Schools, reflecting a push to move away from an appointed Chicago Board of Education."
On Facebook, Rep. Martwick responded: "If passed, the bill will allow Chicagoans to elect someone from their neighborhood to represent their concerns on the Board.
"This is not only an education issue but also a democracy issue. We pay taxes to support the City Colleges (and Chicago Public Schools) but have no direct say in choosing who makes those decisions. Creating an Elected School Board will increase accountability to the taxpayers and residents of Chicago."
Rep. Martwick has filed bills both to create Elected School Boards for both City Colleges of Chicago (HB827) and Chicago Public Schools (HB2267).
