City of Evanston issued the following announcement on Jan. 16.
In an effort to ensure that all Evanston residents have pathways to success, Mayor Stephen Hagerty and Northwestern President Morton Schapiro have allocated $225,000 to support career training and workforce development programs in Evanston in 2019 as part of Northwestern’s $1 million contribution to the City’s Good Neighbor Fund.
The $225,000 allocation includes $135,000 to support existing job training programs for at-risk youth and $90,000 to support Mayor Hagerty's Elevate Evanston workforce development initiative.
"Evanston is fortunate to have a thriving, diverse business community with a wide variety of in-demand career opportunities," said Mayor Hagerty. "This year's Good Neighbor Fund allocation will help the City and its community partners further develop local, sustainable career pathways for our residents, benefiting the entire community. Thank you to President Schapiro and Northwestern University for their commitment to Evanston."
Existing job training programs that will be supported by Northwestern's 2019 Good Neighbor Fund contribution are provided by the City's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. The department's outreach team facilitates the placement of Evanston residents into in-demand employment sectors, including:
- Business and financial
- Food service and hospitality
- Healthcare
- Manufacturing
- Retail
- Technology
- Transportation
Launched in 2018, Elevate Evanston aims to expand collaboration between Evanston employers and educators, improving opportunities for Evanston young adults, strengthening the city's workforce, and providing local employers with a well-prepared pipeline of local talent. The initiative includes the Mayor's Employer Advisory Council, which is focused on improving and developing sustainable career pathways for Evanston high school students and recent ETHS graduates who seek career opportunities that do not require a four-year college degree. The Council has set a goal of moving 100 students per year directly into careers with Evanston employers by the time it sunsets in June of 2021.
This is the fourth year in a row that Northwestern has donated $1 million to the City’s Good Neighbor Fund. Projects and services selected for this year’s allocation will be funded for the 12-month period beginning January 1, 2019. The 2019 Good Neighbor Fund also includes support for Fire Department paramedic services, youth outreach programs, and the Evanston Public Library’s social worker position and portable Wi-Fi Hotspot program.
