Village of Glenview issued the following announcement on Dec. 28.
The countdown is over: 2019 and the Village’s 150th birthday year are finally here! Throughout the year, I’ll include special sesquicentennial events and activities in these monthly Explore, Enjoy & Celebrate Glencoe blogs alongside other community events so you won’t miss a beat. If you’re planning ahead, be sure to take a look at the Sesquicentennial website at www.glencoe150.org for a full calendar of 2019 events and other celebration details.

- Tuesday, January 1: Village Hall Closed
As a reminder, Village Hall closes at Noon on Monday, December 31 and is closed all day on Tuesday, January 1. Tuesday garbage and recycling collection will be delayed by one day, with Tuesday collection on Wednesday. Normal service resumes Thursday.
Don't forget that on Wednesdays during the month of January, Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) will pick-up holiday trees at no cost. Remove all lights, ornaments and garland before placing your tree at the parkway behind the curb.
- Wednesday, January 2 thru Thursday, January 4: Winter Break Days Off

Are your kids looking for fun activities during winter break? Join the Glencoe Park District for its Winter Break Days Off! Children can enjoy a variety of exciting daytime activities including bounce houses, arts and crafts, a trip to the movies and more! Advanced registration (at least one business day in advance) required.
- Through Saturday, January 6: Wonderland Express at the Chicago Botanic Garden
10 a.m.-7 p.m., Chicago Botanic Garden (1000 Lake Cook Road)
'Tis the season for family fun! Stop by the Chicago Botanic Garden for Wonderland Express, an annual holiday extravaganza featuring model trains, magical and glittering indoor snow, intricate ice carvings and Chicago landmarks in miniature.
- Tuesday, January 8: Tower of Power with the Glencoe Community Garden
7-8:30 p.m., Takiff Center (999 Green Bay Road)
Imagine a tower at the Glencoe Community Garden that will generate energy from wind, solar and human power. Come meet and listen to the story of how Jim Goodman and the members of the Power Tower Team, each with a passion for the environment, tell you how they designed and engineered this groundbreaking project.
- Tuesday, January 8: Author Peter Nolan
7:30-8:30 p.m., Glencoe Public Library (320 Park Avenue)
As an Emmy Award-winning television reporter during an especially tumultuous time in Chicago history, Peter Nolan has plenty of good stories to tell. His latest book, News Stories: A Memoir (released in March) includes a vast collection of Chicago characters, including Bears great Sid Luckman, Governor Otto Kerner, columnist Irv Kupcinet, Mayor Harold Washington, and many less-familiar but equally fascinating people. Copies of News Stories will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
- Wednesday, January 9: My First Yoga and Mini Mindfulness
10:30 a.m., Glencoe Public Library (320 Park Avenue)
Ms. Lani from Banner Day Camp will lead preschool-aged children through basic poses and breathing exercises in these fun, easy-to-follow classes. No yoga experience is necessary. Parents or caregivers are welcome to stay to observe or participate, or child may attend independently.
- Saturday, January 12: Who’s Who of Owls
10 a.m.-Noon, Takiff Center (999 Green Bay Road)
To some people, owls are a symbol of wisdom but to others their hoots are harbingers of death and doom. Join award-winning naturalist Mark Spreyer as he reveals the truth about many of our North American owls and raptors. Owls’ amazing hunting adaptations are explained. Live owl guests will illustrate just who’s who! Joint program offered by the Friends of the Green Bay Trail and the Glencoe Park District.
- Wednesday, January 16: Fine-Tune Your Online Dating Profile

Bela Gandhi, founder of Smart Dating Academy and consultant for Match.com, will give tips on profile photos and essays, flirting and those crucial first e-mails and calls.
- Thursday, January 17: Vibrant Living Senior Discussion Group

Glencoe seniors, join in a lively conversation and study on relevant topics in this important season of life. Facilitated by Family Service of Glencoe staff counselor Joan Merlo, LCSW. New attendees are welcome.

Paintings, drawings, and ceramic pieces by our student artists and instructors will be on display. Light refreshments will be served. Free.

Explore classroom at the Takiff Center while squeezing, squishing, painting and doing lots of other fun stuff not allowed at home! Free.

Join St. Paul AME Church and the interfaith community for a celebration of the life and service of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Celebrate everything winter with crafts, carnival games, ice sculpting and more – brought to you by the Glencoe Park District. Free event.
- Wednesday, January 23: One Pot Comfort Food with the Glencoe Community Garden
7-8:30 p.m., Takiff Center (999 Green Bay Road)
Join Pam Gross from The Bread & Buddha Kitchen to learn the art of healthy one-pot cooking. As a Holistic Health Coach, Pam will share her secrets to easy and delicious good-for-you comfort foods that will nourish your whole family. It’s still really chilly outside and you are wondering how you can easily and successfully start your garden indoors. Adrienne Detanico, Lead Gardener with the Organic Gardner, will walk you through the steps to make this happen. From picking the right plants and containers to prepping, watering and choosing lighting options, Adrienne will share her secrets for prosperous seedlings for your outdoor garden.
