State Rep. Tom Morrison (R-Palatine) is celebrating his slim victory against Maggie Trevor in the race to represent the 54th House District.

Only 500 votes separated Morrison, who has been the incumbent for eight years, from his opponent.

Morrison, historically fiscally and socially conservative, always had a generous lead in past elections, making this a tighter race for the Republican representative.

According to Daily Herald, in the most recent counts, Morrison was only 242 votes ahead of his opponent.

Morrison refrained from commenting much on the election, but Trevor did, saying, "We have shown that Democratic candidates can be competitive in the Northwest suburbs, and that we've got a great group of people who are engaged and involved, and an invigorated Democratic organization here to help all our candidates succeed in the future."

The 54th House District includes all or part of of Arlington Heights, Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Palatine, Rolling Meadows and South Barrington.
