EVANSTON TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 202: ETHS hosts Family Action Network event with Karamo Brown on December 5

Highschool089

Evanston Township High School District 202 issued the following announcement on Nov. 12.

Evanston Township High School will host “Know Thyself: Using Your Uniqueness to Create Success” with Karamo Brown, on Wednesday, December 5 at 7:00pm, in the school auditorium. The event, free and open to the public, is suitable for ages 12 and up.

Karamo Brown is the “culture expert” of the “Fab Five” hosts of the super-popular Netflix show Queer Eye, a reality TV series that first premiered as Queer Eye for the Straight Guy in 2003 and ended production in 2007. Netflix then rebooted Queer Eye in January of 2017, setting it in Atlanta rather than New York City, and its first season earned rave reviews. Queer Eye recently won 3 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Structured Reality Program. Brown started his career in television on the MTV reality series The Real World: Philadelphia, becoming the first openly gay black man on reality TV.

Brown is a graduate of Florida A&M University, a historically black university, and worked as a social worker for nearly a decade after The Real World. In 2007, he learned he was the father of a 10-year-old boy, receiving custody of him that year, and then adopted the boy’s half-brother in 2010. Brown co-founded 6in10.org, an organization that works to combat HIV stigma and provides mental health support and HIV education to the black LGBTQ+ community. He is the recipient of the 2018 Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award.

ETHS is located at 1600 Dodge Ave., Evanston, 60201. The auditorium is wheelchair accessible. Guests should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to 7:00pm to find parking and seats. Parking is available in the lot across from the main entrance, off of Dodge Avenue, or in the lots behind the high school. Parking is also available along Dodge Avenue according to posted City of Evanston signs.

The December 5 presentation is sponsored by Family Action Network (FAN), in partnership with Connections for the Homeless, Fusion Academy, New Trier High School D203, the New Trier Parents’ Association, North Shore Country Day School, and The Family Institute at Northwestern University.
