Schaumburg Park District issued the following announcement on June 27.
Bond with animals, enjoy nature and celebrate Schaumburg’s history as a volunteer for Schaumburg Park District’s Volkening Heritage Farm and Spring Valley Nature Center.
Volunteers are wanted at the farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road and Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg https://www.manfrotto.us/mid-level-spreaderRoad. Tasks include feeding livestock, cleaning the barn, tending to the chickens and helping to beautify the landscape.
“Anybody who wants to give back to the community and contribute to what we do here—nature conservation and farm history preservation—can come and help,” said Dave Brooks, manager of conservation services for Spring Valley. “We’d like to have people who can commit to particular shifts and are passionate about supporting our mission and cause.”
The work can be fun and rewarding, Brooks said, especially for animal lovers and people who like being outdoors. In addition to providing a valuable community service, volunteers also earn points that can be redeemed for District programs and merchandise.
“A lot of our visitors don’t realize how many people it takes to keep the Nature Center and Heritage Farm going,” Brooks said. “Volunteers play a crucial role both in helping to deliver programs and keeping the sites looking clean and well-maintained for all the folks who come here. Everything people see when they visit has in some way been touched by volunteers in the community.”
Positions are available for volunteers 14 and older. Volunteers must be 18 and older to work with the animals.
