Skokie FD responds to 92 fires in 2017

Skokie Fire Department responded to 1313 calls in 2017 - 0.5 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Skokie included 92 fires - 36 structure fires, 15 vehicle fires and 41 other fires. The fire department also responded to 22 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,609,214 in fire loss - or about $17,491 per fire.

The department also received 1199 false calls, including 26 malicious calls and 1173 other false calls.

The calls resulted in two civilian fire-related injuries. Additionally, five fire service member were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Skokie Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 115 active employees and 152 retired or inactive employees, was $8,262,123 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $125,184 for every fire in 2016.
