Marilyn Smolenski points to data recently released by Cook County Clerk David Orr as further evidence of how much the state’s new so-called balanced budget truly falls short.

"$213 more in property taxes,”Smolenski, running against state Rep. Marty Moylan (D-Des Plaines) in the 55th District, recently posted on Facebook. “While political ruling class politicians, like my opponent, are out boasting about passing a budget, families in our communities are getting hit with an average of $213 more on their property tax bills."

By Orr’s estimates, taxpayers collectively will pay at least $700 million more this year than they did last, with Northwest suburban homeowners expected to pay an average 3 percent more.

A first-time candidate, Smolenski has also accused Moylan of having “failed” his constituents based on the way he’s reacted to the ongoing sexual harassment scandal now paralyzing Springfield.

"Marty Moylan failed us,” Smolenski recently stated in a press release. "Denise Rotheimer details allegations of sexual harassment, [and] Moylan is silent. Alaina Hampton details allegations of sexual harassment, [and] Moylan is silent. Kelly Cassidy details allegations of sexual harassment, [and] Moylan is silent. Maryann Loncar details allegations of sexual harassment, [and] Moylan is silent. Today, Sherri Garrett details allegations of sexual harassment, [and] Moylan is silent.”
