Although the White House is lauding last week's passage of the Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act, Sixth District U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) had good reason to vote against the measure.
In a June 8 press release, Roskam explained the bill contained language that would have stripped $7 billion in funds from the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This program was extended for an additional decade by Congress late last year.
“When I voted for the Championing Healthy Kids Act last year, which funded CHIP, I did so to ensure our children’s health would not be put in jeopardy,” Roskam said in the release. “Negotiating a spending bill of this magnitude is an extensive process, but we need to take caution that our children do not become collateral damage of our efforts to provide funding to other important programs.”
Roskam said he believes a bipartisan bill to salvage CHIP can be developed.
