COMMUNITY CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL DISTRICT 59: Clearmont’s “Cursive Kids Celebration”

Community Consolidated School District 59 issued the following announcement on May 30.

This June will mark the 30th year Mrs. Schumacher has served as a board member for CCSD59. Throughout her thirty years, Mrs. Schumacher has actively volunteered in schools throughout the district, and this year she spent one day a week with fourth grade students at Clearmont to teach a variety of topics including cursive writing, geography, and history.

The connection with cursive writing was particularly timely as the state of Illinois recently passed House Bill 2977, which states, ““Beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, public elementary schools shall offer at least one unit of instruction in cursive writing. School districts shall, by policy, determine at what grade level or levels students are to be offered cursive writing, provided that such instruction must be offered before students complete grade 5.”

Principal Rachel Solomon and Superintendent Dr. Art Fessler congratulated the fourth grade students and presented them with a certificate of completion. Both Solomon and Fessler also thanked Schumacher for her dedication and time in teaching the students.

“I enjoyed attending the Clearmont celebration of learning,” said Dr. Fessler, “and I also appreciate our board members’ ongoing commitment to serving our students, families, and communities.”
