Buffalo Grove FD responds to 79 fires in 2016

Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded to 605 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the North Cook News.

The calls in Buffalo Grove included 79 fires - 42 structure fires, eight vehicle fires and 24 other fires. The fire department also responded to five calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,103,153 in fire loss - or about $13,964 per fire.

The department also received 526 false calls, including eight malicious calls and 518 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, seven fire service member were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Buffalo Grove Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 55 active employees and 34 retired or inactive employees, was $1,381,723 in debt as of December 2015, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $17,490 for every fire in 2016.
