The price of local government: City of Evanston

The city of Evanston budget was $179.16 million for its 2015 fiscal year, or $8,689.39 per household.

That's a decrease of 21.5 percent from 2014 when the city spent $228.17 million, or $11,066.74 per household.

Evanston has 20,618 households and a population of 75,570.

Since 2001, the city of Evanston budget has grown by 10.2 percent, from $162.64 million. The city population has grown 1.8 percent over the same period, from 74,239.

Salaries accounted for 39.2 percent of city spending in 2015. Evanston property taxpayers paid $70.15 million for 1283 full-time employees and 125 part-time employees.

In 2001, the city had 831 full-time employees and 354 part-time employees and spent $62.25 million.
