Many of the Democrats who pushed through legislation to expand abortion rights in lllinois voted against their beliefs, James Pittman Jr. told the North Cook News recently.
Pittman is associate director of the Bensenville-based Christian Emergency League and pastor of New Hope Community Church in Palatine.
“It is hard for me to even understand why the [Democrats] do what they do most of the time,” Pittman said. “But, if I were to take a stab at it and get talking to Democrats, they think it is a winning issue as it pertains to votes. They think it is a winning issue. Many of the Democrats that I associate with recognize that abortion is the taking of innocent life, but they say that they are not going to force their values on others.”
Governor Bruce Rauner
House Bill 40 provides coverage for abortion procedures for state employees and recipients of Medicaid. Democrats have said its intent is to continue to guarantee abortion rights in Illinois if the U.S. Supreme Court were to overturn its landmark Roe v. Wade decision.
Although the measure passed both legislative houses by the end of the spring session, it has not been sent to Gov. Bruce Rauner. He has vowed to veto the bill over concerns of expanding Medicaid to cover abortion procedures.
Reps. Marty Moylan (D-Des Plaines) and Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg) were among the 62 House members to vote for the legislation in the House. The measure passed along party lines in the Senate.
“My opinion is that by and large, the Democratic party is a godless organization,” Pittman said. “What I mean by that is its anti-Judeo-Christian values.”
In fact, most recent surveys show that Illinoisans do not think taxpayer money should be used to pay for abortions.
