Village of Arlington Heights Arts Commission met March 1.

Here is the minutes as provided by the Commission:

Arts Chair Seitz-Pagano called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.

Members Present: Mary Seitz-Pagano, Arts Chair

Janet Souter

Toni Higgins-Thrash

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

COMMISSIONER SCHURTZ MADE A MOTION, SECONDED BY COMMISSIONER SOUTER, TO APPROVE THE MINUTES

FROM THE JANUARY 4, 2017 ARTS COMMISSION MEETING. ALL WERE IN FAVOR. THE MOTION CARRIED.

SPRING OUTREACH EVENT

Commissioner Schurtz provided an update for the Spring Art Outreach Event. Commission Schurtz explained that Upcoming

Theater will perform two or three acts. Commissioner Schurtz also explained that the Improv Club from Rolling Meadows High

School will be performing and Metropolis will perform one or two acts from Hair. The date of the event is May 21st and the

Commission discussed having the program start at 7:00 PM. Arts Chair Seitz-Pagano suggested that a draft of the invite be put

together for the April meeting. The subcommittee commented that they will continue to coordinate with Joan at Metropolis regarding

the details of the program.

VILLAGE HALL ART

The Commission discussed having the print of ‘Meyers Pond’ touched up in order to recreate some of the detail that has been lost

due to the low quality print/image. The Commissioned discussed making a motion to spend up to $2,000 to move forward with

having the image touched up. Staff Liaison Derek Mach commented that the motion should be contingent on Mr. Musich’s approval

and staff will need to discuss.

COMMISSIONER SOUTER MADE A MOTION, SECONDED BY COMMISSIONER SCHURTZ, TO SPEND UP TO $2,000 TO

RETOUCH MR. MUSICH’S PAINTING OF MEYERS POND CONTINGENT ON STAFF APPROVAL AND MR. MUSICH. ALL

WERE IN FAVOR. THE MOTION CARRIED.

Commissioner Souter commented that meantime, she will continue to try and track down the original painting.

COMMISSIONER SCHURTZ MADE A MOTION, SECONDED BY COMMISSIONER HIGGINS-THRASH, TO MOVE AGENDA

ITEM ‘I’ ‘ARTS COMMISISON BROCURE AND BANNER’ FORWARD ON THE AGENDA. ALL WERE IN FAVOR. THE

MOTION CARRIED.

ARTS COMMISISON BROCHURE AND BANNER

Commissioner Higgins-Thrash commented that the blue on the Arts Commission brochure is not as vivid as the draft that staff

provided. Staff Liaison Derek Mach commented that every printer is going to vary and to avoid this concern in the future, staff

suggested that a draft from the printer be reviewed prior to printing. Commissioner Schurtz commented that the brochure looks

great.

The Commisison reviewed the draft of the banners. Commissioner Higgins-Thrash commented that her preference is the draft that

staff put together. The Commission discussed the cost of the banners. Staff Liaison Derek Mach commented that each banner

would cost approximately $85 plus the cost of the base. The Commission discussed the photos on the banner. The Commission

discussed having two banners. The Commission discussed adding ‘Arts Commission’ at the bottom of the banner.

Commissioner Higgins-Thrash suggested having new banner stands that are the ‘shade style’ since they are more portable. Staff

Liaison Derek Mach expressed concern with the ‘shade style’ banner stand since it may not withstand the elements. Arts Chair

Seitz-Pagano expressed concern with the cost of the ‘shade style’ stands. Arts Chair Seitz-Pagano suggested that the Commission

finalize the banners at the April meeting.

BANNERS

Staff Liaison Derek Mach explained that the spring banners that feature the four winners of the banner competition will be hung in

the next few weeks.

CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAM

Commissioner Souter provided an update for the creative writing program and explained that the Library is working with Metropolis.

Commissioner Souter explained that the Library may host a smaller program in the spring and consider expanding the program next

fall.

CULTURAL ARTS EVENT LISTING

Commissioner Higgins-Thrash shared a copy of the event listing. The Commission agreed that the design of the brochure turned

out excellent. The Commission thanked Commissioner Higgins-Thrash for her work on the project.

IDEA AND PROGRAM LIST

Arts Chair Seitz-Pagano asked if there are any updates. Commissioner Higgins-Thrash asked if her name could be removed from

the Creative Writing Program.

MARKETING UPDATE

Commissioner DeLaney commented that there is no update at this time.

DECORATED OBJECT COMPETITION

The Commission discussed ideas for the July 3 ‘Decorated Object Competition’. Commissioner Souter suggested doing something

that has been already done in the past such as birdhouses. The Commission discussed birdfeeders as a possibility. The

Commission discussed the following objects:

• Old instruments

• Rocks

• Shoes

• Bird feeders

• T-shirts

• Kites

Arts Chair Seitz-Pagano suggested that the Commission finalize the object at the April meeting.

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

The Commission reviewed the six submittals for the Photography Competition. The Commission agreed to review the submittals at

the April Meeting.

FALL 2017 ART OUTREACH EVENT

Arts Chair Seitz-Pagano suggested that the event be discussed at the April Arts Commission meeting.

INFORMATIONAL MATERIAL/ANNOUNCEMENTS

Arts Chair Seitz-Pagano asked if there is any new business? Commissioner Higgins-Thrash commented that a separate leaflet for

Sounds of Summer should be available at the Promenade of Art Festival. Commissioner DeLaney suggested having a map of the

artists booths available at the Commission’s table. Ms. Patel thanked the Arts Commission and commented that the meeting was

informative. Ms. Patel inquired about the Creative Writing Program. Commissioner Souter explained that the program is a joint

effort with the Arts Commission, Library, Metropolis and School District 25.
