Oakton cagers pull down several honors

The postseason has proven particularly positive for the Oakton Community College (OCC) basketball programs.

Tafari Beckford was named to the first team of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IV Division II District 4 All-Region Team. The Skokie native averaged 21.5 points, 11.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.6 blocked shots in conference games.


Ryan Matthew of Park Ridge was named to the NJCAA’s second team. He averaged 16.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting 45 percent from the field, including making 34.3 percent of his three-point shots.

Beckford also was named the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) Player of the Year. Matthew joined Beckford on the all-conference first team. Fellow Owls Pat Hamilton and Marion Johnson were named to the second team.

OCC went 10-4 in league play to finish third in the conference.

On the women’s team, Mallory Gonzalez earned first-team All-ISCC honors, and Atorena Michael and Doris Garcia were named to the second team.
