Oakton Community College's Tafari Beckford was recently named the District 4 Player of the Week, the school announced in a news release.
Beckford, a freshman guard from Skokie, Illinois, earned the award for his play Jan. 5, when he posted 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals in the Owls' 82-61 win over Truman College in Chicago.
His award was first announced in the Region IV National Junior College Athletic Association report.
Oakton Head Coach Mick Reuter said that Beckford played strong despite having an ankle injury in the first half.
“He is a tough and unselfish player with impressive basketball skills,” Reuter said in the news release.
As of Jan. 15, according to njcaa.org, Beckford was averaging 19.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per contest. He is the second Owl to earn Player of the Week honors this season; Ryan Matthew earned the award twice through Jan. 15, according to the school's website.
