Chicago Tribune steers ‘duped’ voters toward Bernas

Jillian Bernas, Republican candidate for the District 56 state House race, recently received a decisive endorsement from the Chicago Tribune based on her platform to consciously curb disproportionately high state-level spending and make Illinois business-friendly once again.

The Tribune published its editorial statement after initially having backed Michelle Mussman, then subsequently withdrawing its support when the incumbent Democrat proved to be too compliant with over-the-top budget proposals earlier this year.

“We were fans of (the 56th District’s) Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg) and her 'Mom on a Mission' slogan when she first ran for office in 2010,” the newspaper said, in announcing its pivot. “Now it seems she’s a mom on a mission to bankrupt the state. After running for office promising to whip Springfield into shape, she has voted for phony, unbalanced budgets, including House Speaker Michael Madigan’s spending plan in May that spent $7 billion more than the state would collect in revenue.”

Bernas expressed gratitude to the publication for its backing as the calendar winds down to November’s election.

"Thank you very much, Chicago Tribune Editorial Board, for endorsing my candidacy for the 56th House District," Bernas said via her Facebook page. "I am going to Springfield to represent you."

The candidate added that she will focus on prioritizing spending and “rethinking government” to better provide services.

“Voters: You’ve been duped,” the Tribune said. “Republican Jillian Rose Bernas of Schaumburg would be a proper check on state spending and would promote policies to attract to Illinois more businesses and jobs — maybe even bring back residents who’ve fled to other states. Bernas is endorsed.”
