Prep update: Hawks girls' tennis team off to usual good start

Three state qualifiers return for Maine South, which is coming off a 16-6 dual record and a sectional title in 2015.

No. 1 singles player Jen Ptak and the No. 1 doubles team of Marti Wind and Kamila Czosnyka bring state-meet experience into this season. Also back from last season are No. 2 singles player Julia Bebene, the No. 2 doubles team of Elaine Smith and Amanda Marino, the No. 3 team of Claire McLintock and Reese Baresky, and doubles players Liza Henn and Nicole Paglari.

The Hawks are off to a 7-2 start this season.

 

MAINE WEST

The Warriors' No 2 singles player, senior Asia Wicker, went 2-0 in a pair of recent duals.

Wicker beat Regina's Mary Brikha 6-2, 6-2 on Sept. 7 and topped Niles West's Grace Nguyen 6-1, 6-4 on Sept. 6.

The No. 2 doubles team of junior Gwendolyn Hudson and Diane Nguyen also won both of its dual matches on those days. No. 1 single Maja Kozerski claimed one win in the duals.

Maine West tied Regina 3-3 and lost to Niles West 5-2.

MAINE WEST

The Warriors were off to a 3-3 start through Sept. 6, according to the school's website.

Maine West has already almost matched its win total of last season, when it went 4-14-2. Returning letter winners are senior midfielder Brant Ibarra, junior defenders Ozzie Espinoza and Adrian Banat, junior midfielders Connor Hilliard and Jonathan Reynoso, and junior forward Geronimo Xolio.
