Schaumburg could have depth for successful golf season

Golf

Schaumburg coach Chris Zickert finds himself cautiously optimistic early in the 2016 season.

“We have a number of golfers who have the skills and ability to go low,” he said in an email interview. “I believe this group is, depth-wise, more talented than we have had in the past couple of years.”

Nick Tudor, coming off a season in which he made the sectionals, leads the returnees and had a good summer playing in various tournaments, Zickert said. Nzelu Maitha also played a number of tourneys this year. Miguel Go, a senior, is being looked to for leadership, while Nick Calip and Dan Meister are being counted on for contributions.

Zickert said the team has had some success so far this season.

“If we can consistently put four scores together, we can be competitive,” he said.

Three seniors head up the roster for the Warriors.

Seniors Max Rothweiler, Shane Ronan and Kyle Roscoe are joined by juniors Matt Mustari, Matt Fairhead, Evan Shacklette, Christian Mirza, Danny Fowler, Chase Stephen and Mikey Hanson, and sophomore Luke Rothweiler.

Maine West was 6-5 through the first part of the season.

“Our success does not depend on the wins or losses, but on how the players grow into lifelong golf players and learners,” coach Mike Godlewski said in an email interview.

Five golfers on the Blue Demons’ roster came into the season with varsity experience.

All five returning varsity players are seniors: Robert Kanczuga, Kevin Beneda, Ryan Sands, John Basnik and Catherine Valeroso, who is on the boys' team because the school has no girls' program.

Ashan Tariq is another senior. Juniors are Josh Beavers, Akash Magnadia and Emilia Molski, with sophomore Will Cashen rounding out the roster.

The team started the season 0-4, including an 0-1 mark in the Central Suburban League North.

“We have a lot of inexperience at all levels, so we are working hard to have players learn the game of golf and to have fun doing it,” coach Anthony Montesano said in an email interview.
