Park Ridge Youth Commission considers upcoming events at June meeting

Members of the City of Park Ridge Youth Commission met Thursday, June 23.

The Park Ridge Youth Services Commission provides a forum for public discussion of topics related to youth activities; acts as an ombudsman for youth in the community; facilitates coordination for various community youth groups; and submits recommendations on these matters to the city council. The commission meets on the second Thursday of each month.

Members Present: Commissioners: Alderman John Moran, Bobby Pierobon, Eileen Sergo

and Jared Skiba. Student Commissioners: Grace Murphy, James Shaughnessy and Patrick Shaughnessy

Members Absent: Commissioners Claire Griebler, Joan Mattingly and Leslie Wolf. Student

Commissioners: Amelia Beck, Kamila Kazimierczuk, Anna Kons, and Ewelina Laczak

Also Present: Officer Ben Peterson - Park Ridge Police Department and Brigid Madden

III. Action Items

A. Approve Minutes from the May 12, 2016 Meeting

This item was deferred to the next meeting because there was not a quorum.

B. Presentation of Logo Contest Awards

Logo contest winner, Kasia Preski, was unable to attend. Her award will be mailed.

IV. Discussion Items

A. Teen Music Night

Commissioner Skiba explained that the bands will be set up on the stairs of City Hall. Volunteers can assist with any set up and tear down before and after the event; however a sound company will be providing the equipment and will likely not require much assistance. He is working with the bands, who are currently preparing their sets.

Alderman Moran asked how the event will be marketed. Commissioner Skiba and Pierobon explained that a flyer is being created by the Park District. It will also be listed on the Park District’s website. It is currently listed on the Taste of Park Ridge website and can be added to the City’s website.

B. National Night Out

This event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 2nd at Hodges Park. The Youth Commission table will be positioned between Citizens Patrol and Alderman Moran’s business to allow for additional staffing.

C. Library Speaker Series

Brigid will circulate a flyer for the event. The Youth Commission has sponsored the cost of the three speakers. Alderman Moran asked if the Commission would be interested in inviting back new freshman for a discussion panel, as it was suggested at a previous meeting. It might be too late to plan this event for the summer, but it can be added to next year’s calendar.

D. New Member Recruitment

Alderman Moran hopes that the summer events will bring in applicants for the Youth Commission. He explained that members must live or attend school in Park Ridge.

E. Committees

Alderman Moran suggested that students can work together on a specific event or service project throughout the year. Commissioner Pierobon suggested setting the calendar up at the first meeting to begin planning as soon as possible.

The current account balance is $3953.96.

Alderman Moran explained that the Youth Commission can assist the Park Ridge Holiday Lights organization in the fall with events and volunteering.

Grace Murphy was acknowledged for her service to the Youth Commission and presented a certificate. This will be her last meeting, as she is graduating and attending Loyola University in the fall.

The meeting adjourned at 6:32pm.
